Use of Tylenol in Pregnancy Tied to Higher ADHD Risk in Child

Use of Tylenol in Pregnancy Tied to Higher ADHD Risk in Child Risk increases with longer use, researchers say; experts caution the finding needs verification   Expectant mothers suffering from fever or headache may face a new dilemma when they open the medicine cabinet. Pregnant women who take acetaminophen -- best known under the brand name Tylenol -- might be more likely to have a child with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a new long-term study suggests. Acetaminophen is the most commonly used over-the-counter medication for pregnant women who experience fever or pain. Children whose mothers took acetaminophen while pregnant had up to a 40 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with ADHD, according to the research, which involved more than 64,000 Danish mothers and their children. The kids were born between 1996 and 2002. By the age of 7, these children also were more likely to use ADHD medication and exhibit ADHD-like behavior problems, according...

Hepatitis C Virus Structure

Researchers determined the structure of a protein on the surface of the hepatitis C virus that allows it to gain entry into cells. The finding may aid in the development of a vaccine to prevent the liver disease. Structure of the E2 core domain. Sheet B is a novel region. Image by the authors, courtesy of Nature. Hepatitis C is an infectious disease caused by a virus. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) attacks the liver, leading to inflammation. Most infections become chronic, as the body is unable to get rid of the virus. In the United States, more than 3 million people have chronic HCV infection. Worldwide, approximately 160 million people are estimated to have chronic hepatitis C. Doctors recommend that people who are at higher risk of getting hepatitis C should be tested for HCV infection. Left untreated, chronic hepatitis C can cause severe liver disease or liver cancer. If the organ becomes extremely damaged, liver failure may occur and require a transplant. Several medici...

Recommendations of Aspirin for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease

Recommendations for Aspirin Use to Control Existing Cardiovascular Disease Aspirin can be beneficial to individuals who already have experienced a heart attack, stroke, angina or peripheral vascular disease, or have had certain procedures such as angioplasty or bypass. Doctors may recommend aspirin use for persons with these conditions unless there is another medical reason why these individuals should not take aspirin. Because aspirin may not be the most effective therapy for everyone, other anti-platelet medicines may be used instead of aspirin or along with aspirin. As with all medications, patients with cardiovascular disease should first speak with their health care provider to learn about the benefits and potential harms of aspirin therapy for them. Providers should be aware that recommendations on size of dose and length of treatment may vary among organizations and by disease     Recommendations for Aspirin Use to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease ...

New cache of fresh neurons found in human brains

Brain cell regeneration has been discovered in a new location in human brains. The finding raises hopes that these cells could be used to help people recover after a stroke, or to treat other brain diseases. For years it was unclear whether or not we could generate new brain cells during our lifetime, as the process – neurogenesis – had only been seen in animals. Instead, it was thought that humans, with our large and complex brains, are born with all the required neurons. Then last year Jonas Frisén of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and his colleagues found that neurogenesis occurs in the hippocampi of the human brain. These structures are crucial for memory formation Now they have found more new brain cells in a second location – golf-ball-sized structures called the striata. These seem to be involved in many different functions, including in learning and memory. These particular aspects, related as they a...

Moisturize Your Diabetic Feet

-- Diabetics, often plagued by poor circulation, must pay careful attention to the feet. Moisturizing your feet regularly can help keep the skin from cracking and drying. The American Diabetes Association offers these moisturizing suggestions: Gently dry your feet after your bath or shower, then coat feet with a small amount of hand cream or petroleum jelly. Avoid rubbing creams or oils between the toes. This increases a person's risk of fungal infection. Avoid soaking your feet, which ultimately can dry the skin.
